Hunan art festival promotes rural culture vitalization

The annual Huaihua Beautiful Country Culture and Arts Festival recently took place in Huna

n province, aiming to involve more villagers in art creation and vitalize local culture.

Hosted by the China Art Association, Hunan Photographers Association and the Huaihua Feder

ation of Literary and Art Circles, this year’s arts festival featured local people performing a vari

ety of disciplines on stage, including wind and percussion music, group dance and Chinese operas.

Unique to this year’s arts festival is a photography exhibition, showcasing 50 pictures taken by mi

grant workers. The photos are selected from the award winners of the 2018 Hunan Province W

orkers Photography Exhibition.
“These photos focus on the extraordinary achievements made by laborers from all wa

lks of life, freeze-framing the wonderful moments of their daily work, presenting their diligence, endeavor and co

mmitment to innovation,” says Liang Xiangfeng, secretary-general of Hunan Photographers Association.

The exhibition is a major measure taken by the association in 2019 in its bid to use the arts to alleviate poverty and promote rural vitalization.

Founder of the arts festival, artist Shu Yong, says: “To vitalize the countryside, we must first vitalize rur

al culture. Only when the local villagers feel proud of their home and culture, can rural vitalization truly be realized.”

With more and more people gathering at the lake, it became over

run with fences and nets used to trap fish. Pollutants discharged by residents liv

ing in the area went directly into the lake, and water quality went from bad to worse.

“We could drink directly from the lake at the beginning, but a few years lat

er, the water began to stink, and we had to buy bottled water onshore” Chen recalled.

Overfishing and other human activities put the lake in crisis.

Realizing the need to clean up the lake, the local government took a series of protec

tive measures including relocating all the fishermen and getting rid of all the fences and nets.

Under the government policy on relocation of fishermen, Chen got 170,000 yuan (around 25,368 U.S. dollars) of

subsidy after moving onshore. Using the subsidy, the 110,000 yuan he got from selling his boat to the g

overnment and his own savings, he bought a nice apartment not far from his workplace.

China remains top trade supplier of Algeria in books draws visit

ALGIERS — China consolidated its position as the largest trade supplier of Algeria in 2018, according to a report by Algerian Customs on Saturday.

Algeria imported from China goods and services worth $7.85 billion in 2018, represe

nting 17 percent of the total import of the North African nation, the report said.

China has remained the top exporter to Algeria for the past six years, it added.

France is the second largest exporter to Algeria with $4.78 billion, followed by Italy ($3.65 billion), Spain ($3.53 billion) and Germany ($3.18 billion).

However, Algeria witnessed a 53.73-percent decline in its trade deficit to $5.03 billion in 2018, against $10.87 billion in 2017, said the report.

The decrease in trade deficit is the result of improved oil prices combined with the policy of

restricting import adopted since the beginning of 2017 by the Algerian government, the report said.

According to the report, the country’s exports amounted to $41.16 billion in 2018, up 16.98 percent from 2019.

Fire Ritual is deeply influenced by worship music and court music in

ancient China, while blending western and modern musical elements. Hand cymbals, resembli

ng those in Peking Opera, were seamlessly merged with a Baroque violin ensemble, and the sound

of bird chirping echoed the hymns of human beings, creating dialogue between mankind and nature.

Various non-musical objects, as a signature style of Tan, were used to imitate cer

tain sounds. For example, the orchestra repeatedly turned pages of their scores to create the sound of wind.

Singaporean conductor Kahchun Wong led the orchestra for the first time. He turned himself

into a Shaman in the ritual with rich body languages, adding to a sense of immersive theatrical ex

perience for some 2,700 spectators, who gave a standing ovation when the piece concluded.

Wong in 2016 became the first Asian to win the prestigious international Gustav Mahler Conducting Competition for young conductors held in Germany.

Other programs during the night included an adapted version of Korean folk song Arirang, and Mozart’s Der H

olle Rachefrom The Magic Flute, both performed by South Korean soprano So Young Park as her Philharmonic debut.
